Bounded Ratios of Products of Principal Minors of Positive Definite Matrices

چکیده
Considered is the multiplicative semigroup of ratios of products of principal minors bounded over all positive definite matrices. A long history of literature identifies various elements of this semigroup, all of which lie in a subsemigroup generated by Hadamard-Fischer inequalities. Via cone-theoretic techniques and the patterns of nullity among positive semidefinite matrices, a semigroup containing all bounded ratios is given. This allows the complete determination of the semigroup of bounded ratios for 4-by-4 positive definite matrices, whose 46 generators include ratios not implied by Hadamard-Fischer and ratios not bounded by 1. For n ≥ 5 it is shown that the containment of semigroups is strict, but a generalization of nullity patterns, of which one example is given, is conjectured to provide a finite determination of all bounded ratios.

On generators of bounded ratios of minors for totally positive matrices
We provide a method for factoring all bounded ratios of the form det A(I1|I ′ 1) det A(I2|I ′ 2)/ det A(J1|J ′ 1) det A(J2|J ′ 2) where A is a totally positive matrix, into a product of more elementary ratios each of which is bounded by 1, thus giving a new proof of Skandera’s result. The approach we use generalizes the one employed by Fallat et al. in their work on principal minors. We also ob...
متن کاملMultiplicative Principal-minor Inequalities for a Class of Oscillatory Matrices
A square matrix is said to be totally nonnegative (respectively, positive) if all of its minors are nonnegative (respectively, positive). Determinantal inequalities have been a popular and important subject, especially for positivity classes of matrices such as: positive semidefinite matrices, M−matrices, and totally nonnegative matrices. Our main interest lies in characterizing all of the ineq...
متن کاملPositivity of principal minors, sign symmetry and stability
The relation between positivity of principal minors, sign symmetry and stability of matrices is studied. It is shown that for sign symmetric matrices, having positive principal minors is equivalent to stability, to D-stability, and to having a positive scaling into a stable matrix. The relation between spectra of matrices some of whose powers have positive principal minors and matrices whose co...
متن کاملPrincipal minors and rhombus tilings
The algebraic relations between the principal minors of an n× n matrix are somewhat mysterious, see e.g. [LS09]. We show, however, that by adding in certain almost principal minors, the relations are generated by a single relation, the so-called hexahedron relation, which is a composition of six cluster mutations. We give in particular a Laurent-polynomial parameterization of the space of n× n ...
متن کاملComputing the Matrix Geometric Mean of Two HPD Matrices: A Stable Iterative Method
A new iteration scheme for computing the sign of a matrix which has no pure imaginary eigenvalues is presented. Then, by applying a well-known identity in matrix functions theory, an algorithm for computing the geometric mean of two Hermitian positive definite matrices is constructed. Moreover, another efficient algorithm for this purpose is derived free from the computation of principal matrix...
